Michael S. Sherrill received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1982. He graduated from the University of Iowa School of Law in 1984. He is licensed as an attorney in Minnesota and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a patent attorney. He is also licensed to practice before the United States Court for the District of Minnesota, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Following graduation from law school, Mike practiced law with firms in Downtown Minneapolis. Following his natural entrepreneurial bent, in 1996 Mike founded Sherrill Law Offices. Mike is experienced in numerous areas of intellectual property law including assessing the patentability of new concepts; evaluating the availability of trademarks; procuring patent, trademark and copyright protection; identifying and protecting trade secrets; evaluating patent infringement; assessing patent validity; conducting trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings; auditing intellectual property assets; and development, maintenance and enforcement of a strong intellectual property portfolio. Mike also advises international clients in all matters of trademark and patent protection.
Mike has extensive patent experience in several technical areas including chemical, biochemical and mechanical products and processes.
Kathryn (Kathy) K. Smith graduated from Wayne State College in 1978, was awarded an M.S. degree from The Pennsylvania State University in 1982, attended the University of Minnesota from 1982-1986, and graduated from William Mitchell College of Law with a J.D. in 1995.
Kathy advises and represents businesses and individuals on a wide range of matters, including business and corporate law, general business planning, civil litigation, commercial litigation, patent litigation, trademark litigation, contract law, transactional law, employment law, and matters involving personal injury, workers’ compensation, and estate planning.
Kathy is also experienced in evaluating trademark availability, and securing trademark protection, securing federal copyright protection, maintaining and enforcing trademark, and copyright rights, and advising national and international clients for Sherrill Law Offices in all matters of trademark protection.
Kathy is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Ramsey County Bar Association, and is admitted to practice before State and Federal Courts in Minnesota. She also appears before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board on disputed matters. She has represented clients with disputes in Wisconsin, Missouri, North Dakota, California, Ohio, and Massachusetts. Kathy volunteers as a SCORE® representative, and is a past presenter for Minnesota Continuing Legal Education.
Iza Gonzalez graduated with Bachelor degree in Advertising from Universidad Autonoma de Centro América in Costa Rica. Iza is a legal assistant for the Intellectual Property group in the firm. She is also fluent in Spanish.Contact Iza
